The concept of Bring Your Own Devices has taken solid root over the last two years. Let us open our eyes and see what the state of BYOD will be in 2020.
A few years ago, the concept of smart phone did not even exist. Today, no one will buy a phone that does not have the features of a smart phone.
Companies such as Samsung, Pebble and other are cramming extraordinary features into a tiny wrist watch. Google is playing around with glasses that are also smart. Tiny boxes that project a keyboard on to the table are available today. Scientists are experimenting with dust particles to be used as a screen for holographic projection.
Devices used in 2020 for communication and other purposes, may be completely different. They will certainly be smaller, and may not have a screen at all. The OS may be completely voice activated doing away with the need for a keyboard. Devices like the Google Glasses will become ubiquitous and they will be packed with more features that we can even imagine now. BYOD will be taken to the next level in the coming decade and by the year 2020, the mobile devices would have transformed into gadgets that we only find in the Sci-Fi movies.
By 2020 the BYOD model would have been adopted by most of the major concerns around the world and employees would be walking around wearing gadgets that would be helping them carry out their daily work. The BYOD model, even in the year 2020, will not relieve the companies of the responsibility of ensuring a safe and secure working environment for their employees. There will be issues that would crop up, some of them introduced by the employees themselves; still the companies will not be able to shrug off their responsibilities. For instance, if an employee wearing a battery-powered device on their hands gets injured while working, the responsibility for the same is certainly going to fall upon the company. Every company will have to draw up new policies to accommodate the BYOD model so that both employees and companies find it easier to work with the latest technologies.
The most significant aspect of BYOD in the year 2020 will be the people who will adapt it – the companies and enterprises who adopted the smartphones and other mobile devices will be the first to introduce the new technologies like Google Glasses too. The IT departments will have the responsibility of introducing the right technology and devices by carrying out a thorough security analysis; they should introduce the devices that pose low security threat to their organizations.
The companies and their IT departments should take the initiative to introduce the wearable mobile devices like Google Glass or smart watches – this will make them aware of the issues that the new devices present. The BYOD policies along with the IT management systems and employee education should be higher in the priority list of the companies prior to adopting the new technologies and devices.
Best practices and responsible usage must be ensured by the top management by providing the right kind of awareness and usage training to the employees. BYOD will certainly be opening up newer communication avenues in front of the enterprises and executives and they should make the most by adopting and using them in the best possible manner. The day is not far when we are going to see people moving around while typing on their virtual keyboard set up on a wall. People will be sharing files directly from virtual device where they would only have to voice search for a said file and it would appear in front of their eyes. Social networking related data updates would be visible even if they do not have a wearable screen or other display device. BYOD is going to stretch our imagination to its limits but we only need the right policies for the same.
