Narendra Modi fans planning Android smartphone called Smart Namo

Gujarat CM Narendra Modi is clearly among the more popular political figures in India today. So much so, a bunch of Gujarati businessmen have decided to launch a Narendra Modi-branded smartphone called Smart Namo. In addition to this Android handset, the independent body of businessmen, also called Smart Namo, will be launching a “signature edition” smartphone too. The word "Namo" stands for Narendra Modi as well as Next Generation Android Mobile Odyssey, the group’s official website reveals.

The smartphone in question runs on the 1.5 GHz MT6589 Turbo chipset, and will have an unspecified version of Android for the operating system. The Smart Namo will sport a 13-megapixel camera at the rear and sport a 5-inch display protected by Gorilla Glass 2. Going by the information on the website the phone will also be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions.

The minds behind the Smart Namo project are businessmen who hail from Gujarat and run a phone business in China. While speaking to The Wall Street Journal, spokesperson Anmeet Desai said that the project was inspired by products in China being named after Chinese leaders.

Desai also said the initial version of this smartphone would cost less than Rs 16,000. He revealed that it would have apps and videos related to Modi. The group also plans to bring cheaper phones to the market, including a phone costing just Rs 1,000.

Desai told the WSJ that the members of the Smart Namo project will design the phone and take it to Modi for approval sometime next month.

Smart Namo is on Facebook too, and going by the number of likes, it seems that the project is gaining interest.
