Google offers support to open source cyber security

Google takes special financial endeavor to encourage independent initiative for ensuring cyber security.

Besides encouraging ethical hackers with financial benefits for effectively reporting vulnerabilities in third-party open-source projects, Google has declared financial support for open source developers also to assist in assembling special resources for security of their products.

The particular effort which is called "Patch Rewards Program," was launched almost 6 years ago, under which Google rewards hackers for reporting severe flaws in many widely used open source software, including OpenSSH, OpenSSL, Linux kernel, Apache, Nginx, jQuery, and OpenVPN.

Till date Google has paid an enormous amount of dollars as bounty to hackers all over the world who have helped to improve the total security of many crucial open source software and technologies that fuel the internet, operating systems, and networks.

The company has now taken to encourage independent work by the open source community by extending financial support to anti hacking groups to enhance their technical efficiency to combat hacking.

The announcement pertains to both small teams ($5,000) as well as for larger team ($30,000) of developers.

In a blog post published by Google it is said that small teams could avail the reward for solving a small number of security issues. Large open source teams need to use the monetary resource to ensure security, like providing support to find additional developers, or implementing significant new security features.

If one runs any open source project or wants to support any other open-source project, one can nominate it for support from Google by filling out https://goo.gle/patchz-nomination.

"Any open source project can be nominated for support. When selecting projects, the panel will put an emphasis on projects that either are vital to the health of the Internet or are end-user projects with a large user base," Google says.

"Our Patch Reward Panel will review submissions on a monthly basis and select a number of projects that meet the program criteria."

ISOEH has been instrumental is educating India to build an ethical hackers nation and make the cyber world hacking free.
