Sony is actively pursuing the goal of developing the next generation gaming console successor to the PlayStation 3, even as some experts have argued that the current generation console may be the last one of its kind. Research and Development budgets have already been allocated for the new gaming console and the upcoming NGP handheld from the same company.
Masaru Kato, Sony's Chief Financial Officer confirmed, "We have a portable, NGP, to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. And for the home equipment, the PS3, this still has a product life, but this is a platform business".
"So for the future platform, when we will be introducing what product I cannot discuss that, but our development work is already underway and the costs are incurred there", he added. Interestingly, this contradicts with the statement made in March this year by Sony's CEO, Kaz Hirai, stating that Sony is not even debating about any home console for the near future with the PS3 still posting strong sales and having a planned lifecycle of 10 years.
While it is already known that Nintendo is working on the successor to the Wii, and is slated to announce it during the E3, this is the first acknowledgment from Sony about the PS3's successor. Microsoft may also make a similar announcement about the successor to its Xbox 360's successor.
