Details of a pair of Galaxy Mega handsets from Samsung, designed to sit mid-way between the company's Galaxy Note family of pen-enabled devices and the Galaxy S family of smartphones, have leaked out ahead of an official announcement from the company.
According to sources, Samsung is looking to release two different devices under its Galaxy Mega brand: the first will use a 5.8in display, while the second ups the size to a tablet-like 6.3in. Both, as is common across all Samsung Galaxy devices, will be based on a version of Google's Android operating system with Samsung's own user interface across the top.
The Galaxy Mega 5.8 will, according to a spec sheet leaked to SamMobile, be powered by a dual-core processor, likely one of Samsung's own Exynos chips, along with 1.5GB of RAM. The large 5.8in screen looks to be, sadly, a mid-range qHD affair with a resolution of just 540x960, and uses thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal technology rather than the AMOLED found in Samsung's flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S4 - which means lower contrast ratios and poorer viewing angles.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3, meanwhile, has been leaked to Korean news site Daum with claims of similar specifications including a dual-core processor and the same Android 4.1.2 base OS, customised with Samsung's own overlay. Both handsets will apparently include a two megapixel front-facing camera and an eight megapixel rear-facing camera with Full HD video recording capabilities.
The leaks point to a renewed focus at the mid-range market for Samsung, coming hot on the heels of the official announcement of the Galaxy Win. Although smaller than the claimed Galaxy Mega devices, with a 4.7in 800x480 liquid-crystal display, the Win is clearly aimed at a similar market, and while it includes a more powerful quad-core processor, this runs at 1.2GHz to the Galaxy Megas' 1.4GHz dual-core chip and includes less memory at 1GB.
Samsung has yet to comment on its plans to launch the Galaxy Mega devices, and has not provided a release date or pricing for the Galaxy Win in the UK.
