Chrome vs Firefox - Android browser

It wasn’t all that long ago that Mozilla and Google started making web browsers that, in their own ways, completely changed the way we interact with websites. The goal for both companies was pretty simple — get people away from Internet Explorer and make a better web. Since then, Mozilla and Google have been consistently leap-frogging each other in terms of the best browsing experience. The fastest load times, the most features, and interaction between computers have all been mini battlefields that these two companies have fought on. Now, they are taking the fight to mobile, in an attempt to bring a faster, smarter web to our phones and tablets.

Now, both Google and Mozilla have released beta versions of their incredibly powerful, PC-class browsers to Android. Which is the better beta though?

Most browsers are tested side-by-side using what are generally accepted to be the best benchmarks for determining performance levels. There are so many different things that happen in a browser — especially a modern one — that there’s not really any one definitive test. So, both of these browsers were given Sunspider 9.1, Acid3, and HTML5 benchmarks to see how well they held up against one another. All of the tests were performed on a Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Chrome beta vs Firefox beta

Sunspider 9.1 is a Javascript test designed to provide results that best reflect real world usage. The benchmark tests everything from 3D capabilities to code decompression, even cryptography tests. It is widely considered to be the best test for determining how well a browser will handle regular daily browsing. While the overall score for both of these web browsers is very close, you can see specific areas in which Chrome and Firefox demonstrate strengths and weaknesses. For example, Firefox takes significantly longer than Chrome in tests like 3D raytracing, but id well over 100ms faster than Chrome in code decompression. As a result, basic websites will load noticeably faster on Firefox than on Chrome, but Chrome will handle more complex tasks and animations better.

Firefox vs Chrome for Android
The Acid3 test measures how well a browser follows the standards for the web that have been assembled by the W3C. This is a simple visual test that will plainly show whether or not a browser is complying with these standards. As you can pretty plainly see, Firefox is just shy of being entirely W3C compliant, while Chrome maintains the same 100% compliance seen in the desktop version of the browser.

One percent isn’t a huge difference at all, but in the instance demonstrates that websites that are built to W3C standards might not look exactly like they should on Firefox.

Firefox vs Chrome for Android beta
The HTML5 test is purely designed to test a browsers ability to adhere to the new technologies and standards that currently make up the HTML5 specification. This test isn’t really a demonstration of performance or compliance, but a demonstration of how the browser will handle some basic HTML5 tasks. Since the HTML5 specification is still incomplete, this test isn’t quite as relevant as the other two, but it gives you a good idea of which company is planning for the future. Unsurprisingly, both Firefox  beta and Chrome for Android performed pretty well, though Chrome managed to wind up just a bit above Firefox.

Benchmarks are a lot of fun, but what about the real world? At the end of the day, both of these browsers deliver a superior browsing experience, and they both have critical strengths and weaknesses. Firefox beta loads most websites much faster than Chrome beta, but Chrome is able to deliver things like search results much faster. Additionally, the Firefox Beta is available on far more devices at the moment that Chrome, which is still limited to Android 4.0. Much like my home computer, I see myself having both installed for awhile, switching back and forth as I try to decide which browser I like better.

Bitdefender SAFEBOX Cloud Storage - Review

Safebox is an online file storage, or as the high tech buzzword crowds like to say, it’s a “cloud storage” system for your files. You may be most familiar with this cloud computing concept from sites like Google Docs. As it is powered by Bitdefender Antivirus, the advantage of Safebox over Google docs Safebox also acts like an online back system, it keeps copies of your files on local home/office computer and in syncs them across all your mobile devices and connected accounts, but we’re getting ahead of our ourselves.

Overview
Bitdefender Safebox is a quality online backup solution that offers up to 60GBs of data storage. It can also be used for syncing data at home or at work, while being monitored by the user via mobile access. Bitdefender Safebox is a perfect all-rounder cloud storage solution that includes data collaboration. You can share Docs, pictures and videos without worrying about security.

Each registered user gets an initial 2GB of free online storage space that can be extended further to a maximum of 60GB for Premium users. Safebox, you can create multiple folders on cloud and store your computer or Android data.

Best USP for this product is No file size limits and easy folder synchronization. Unlike other synchronization applications that only synchronize one folder, Safebox allows you to backup and sync an unlimited number of folder, no matter where they reside on your PC.

Safebox keeps your data private. It shields your files by encrypting them when they are uploaded and stored on remote servers.

Features
Just like other leading cloud storage gurus, Safebox offers you all the essential features. You won’t have to ‘abide by the commandments of upload time’; you can simply schedule your own auto-backup.
Amongst its other features, Safebox’s online file manager really stands out. It’s easy to use, and allows you to access and share files the way you can in your favorite browser. It also offers a great way to send email notifications and sync computers, and you can view and monitor the data traffic, too.

We’re sure that you’ll need the syncing power of Safebox Syncing, once you have observed just how exclusive it is.  It gives you a simplistic way of syncing data and files at home, work, and school.  With Safebox Syncing you can do some of your work at your office and, because you can access the data from anywhere, finish it off at home.

Safebox continuously updates your data; you don’t need to remember which file belongs to which version. It also offers smart collaboration of data with friends.  You can share pictures and videos, send links, and create galleries of your favorite videos and photos. On top of all that, Safebox is the perfect platform for sharing music, too.

Mobile Access
Of all the various cloud backup systems that we have reviewed, Safebox has one of the best sharing tools. With iPhone and iPod Touch apps, you can log in to your account and access data, so view your files or upload them with a 3G or faster device, and enjoy the experience.

Data Storage Space
Safebox offers various price plans. At present, they have plans for 30GB, and 60 GB backup space. You can contact Safebox if you want or need to exceed the 60GB backup limit, and this will be provided at additional cost.

How to Download, Install & sharing Files with Safebox
To get started with Safebox you visit their website, create and download the application. In most cases it will create a file in your “my documents” or documents folder. It will also create a few subfolders, like "documents" “pictures” and “movies”. Unless you have a good reason to want it somewhere else, I’d just leave the default installation settings as is.

Next you’re going to need to install Safebox on any remote devices you’ll be using like mobile phone, tablet, and computer at your second office, laptop/netbook you travel with. If you have a dedicated file server, install it there too.

If you have Safebox installed on a second computer, like file server or laptop, if those computers are on and connected to the internet the file will download and sync to each of those machines as well. Each time you save a file or update a file in the Safebox folder, and you are connected to the internet, it will upload, distribute and sync across all of your computers/accounts, automatically. The one difference is your mobile devices. For smart phones and tablets, in most cases you will have to open the application for the files to sync.

Specs: Online backup, storage and sync service, 2GB free storage space, works with iOS, Android and PC (Windows XP / Vista / 7)

Google+ And Gmail Integration With Quick Contact Access

Google has brought its Google+ social network and its Gmail service a little closer again this week, launching a number of new features that help the two integrate together.

The new features provide users of Gmail with quick access to contact details when viewing past conversations, together with improved integration with Google+ circles.

When you now search for contact details within Gmail, the search results will show you their contact details as well as that person’s profile photo and the emails received and sent to them in the past.

Within Google+’s circles, Google now allows you to see profile photos of people in that circle at the top right of the page, when thou select a circle, and when you click any images you are then taken directly to the search results and contact details.

Upcoming Gadgets of 2012 - People's Choice

Many people over the Internet are quite curious to know what new technology, or product will be released in the next year. Before we move onto 2012, here are some of the major releases in 2011 were – Chromebook, Google Plus, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and so on.

There are many products that are set to be launched in 2012. However, some of us wish that these products were here right now, such as Apple’s next iPad 3 and iPhone 5, and of course many users are waiting for the release of Microsoft’s next tablet friendly operating system – Windows 8.

2012 Gadgets – Upcoming Releases in 2012

Here’s a list of some of the major upcoming 2012 gadgets and products:

Apple iPhone 5

No doubt, the Apple iPhone 5 is one of the most anticipated 2012 gadgets. Apple launched the iPhone 4S, which disappointed its fans very much. Although the device has some nice changes under the hood, including the addition of voice-recognizing personal assistant Siri and an excellent 8-megapixel camera, the phone looks quite identical to its predecessor – iPhone 4.

2012 Gadgets
The upcoming phone from Apple is expected to sport the Apple’s latest and greatest A5 processor chip, iCloud service, higher-resolution camera, and a 4-inch screen size.

Apple iPad 3

Along with the iPhone 5, fans are also eagerly expecting the release of iPad 3, which now reports indicate that it has been scheduled to be launched in February next year. The new tablet, in competition to Samsung Galaxy Tab will feature a new, thinner and sleeker design, down nearly 20 percent in size compared to the iPad 2. It will also support full touchscreen HD display with a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536.
Coolest 2012 Gadgets
Apart from that, the iPad 3 will have a lighter battery life, reducing the weight of the tablet. However, the battery is reported to cost 20 to 30 percent more than the current iPad’s battery, which will also have a longer battery life.

It is also expected that the iPad 3 will have a wireless charging technology, which will be able to charge the battery and transfer data wirelessly.

Windows 8

The next version of Windows is yet another, most anticipated product after the Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3. Windows 8 offers a number of new features from its all new UI to Windows App Store and improvised security features.

Windows 8 has got an interactive UI called the “Metro-style” design, which shows the most important information to you, embodies simplicity, and gives you full control over it. The UI is designed to provide a fluid and intuitive interaction and navigation with touch, or a mouse and keyboard.

Best Gadgets of 2012
Microsoft released a Developer Preview of the Windows 8, which is currently in pre-beta version. The developer version shows off the current stage of the OS. It is available for free download at the official Windows site.

Quad Core Mobile Devices

Dual-core is old now. Welcome Quad-core. It is said that Quad-core smartphones with high resolution screens and graphics will take over in 2012 – nVidia Tegra 3 and Qualcomm Snapdragon are battling out for the fastest quad processor in the mobile market.

Chip maker Nvidia says that smartphones featuring its quad-core Tegra 3 processors may arrive in the first half of 2012. Meanwhile, Qualcomm indicates that its quad-core Snapdragon will make its appearance in Windows 8 tablets in the second half of 2012.

Some of the features that a quad-core smartphone would offer are:
- Advanced video and photo editionnVidia Tegra 3
- Multi-tab web browsing
- High-end graphics games
- Improved voice control and “air” gestures
- Better multitasking

Xbox 360 Update

The next generation of the Xbox is expected to arrive in 2012. This would be a direct competition to the Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii U. The following features will be included in the next Xbox update:
- New personal and social features including Cloud storage for game saves and Live profile
- Beacons and Facebook sharing
- Enhanced family settings
- Integrated voice and gesture controls across the dashboard and in apps
- Bing voice search (available this year in the US, UK and CA)
Recently we saw the new Xbox 360 Dashboard update. The look and feel of the new dashboard is probably the most noticeable difference, which sports a Windows 8, Metro-style interface.

Wii U

In competition to Sony’s PlayStation Vita, Nintendo is set to release the next version of its gaming console called Wii U, which is the direct successor to the Wii. Nintendo unveiled the Wii U in it’s press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2011 on June 7, 2011.
Wii U
It is the first console from Nintendo to produce 1080p high-definition graphics, featuring a new controller with an embedded touchscreen. Nintendo showcased a prototype version of Wii U, which features a touch screen over 6 inches wide and contains a built-in microphone, speakers, gyroscope, accelerometer, rumble and camera.

The Nintendo Wii U will also feature internal flash based memory for media storage and game save data, however the system will also support external SD card and USB HDD support allowing users to expand storage capacity. It is expected to be released sometime after March 2012.

Apple HD TV – Upcoming 2012 Gadgets

Speculations around the Internet indicate that Apple is preparing to release a high-definition television set. The TV is expected to come in 15 to 19-inch range powered by the company’s mobile operation system, iOS. The TV, however, is not only used to play videos, but also play games, run applications and providing you control over social networking sites, like Twitter, Facebook and Google+. It seems that dish satellite television will one day be extinct.

Apple had launched Apple TV, a set-up box used for streaming video to a television, which was first released on January 9, 2007.

It is expected that such a TV set from Apple would be available in time for the 2012 holiday season.

Samsung Galaxy S3

After having a huge success with the Samsung Galaxy S2, it is rumored that Samsung has been busy working on the next version of the smartphone Samsung Galaxy S3. It is expected that the device will feature a Samsung Exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.8GHz and an ARM Cortex A9 chip, which will offer a 25% performance boost and a 30% reduction in power consumption.

It is also expected that the Galaxy S3 will most probably be powered by Google’s latest OS – Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Rumors indicate that Samsung may unveil Galaxy S3 at a similar time to the iPhone 5.

Your Expectations for 2012 Gadgets Release:

So, the above 2012 gadgets list comprises some of the major gadgets and products that are scheduled to be released for the year 2012. Penguin Update in two weeks by google - Ways To Recover & Negative SEO

It’s been about two weeks since Google launched its Penguin Update. Google’s happy the new spam-fighting algorithm is improving things as intended. But some hurt by it are still wondering how to recover, and there remain concerns about “negative SEO” as a threat. I caught up with Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s web spam team, on these and some related questions.

Penguin: “A Success”

The goal of any algorithm update is to improve search results. So how’s Penguin been for Google?
“It’s been a success from our standpoint,” Cutts said.

What About Those Weird Results?

Of course, soon after Penguin was released, people quickly started citing examples of odd results. The official Viagra site wasn’t listed, while hacked sites were. An empty web site was listed for “make money online,” and there were reports of other empty sites ranking well. Scraper sites were reported outranking the sites they scraped.

How could Penguin be a success with these types of things happening?
Cutts said that many of these issues existed before Penguin launched and were not caused by the new spam-fighting algorithm.

Indeed, the Viagra issue, which has now been fixed, was a problem before Penguin hit. Penguin didn’t cause it.

False Positives? A Few Cases

How about false positives, people who feel they’ve been unfairly hit by Penguin when they weren’t doing any spam?

“We’ve seen a few cases where we might want to investigate more, but this change hasn’t had the same impact as Panda or Florida,” Cutts said.

The Panda Update was Google’s big update that targeted low-quality spam last year. The Florida Update was a major Google update in 2003 intended to improve its search quality.

I’d agree that both of those seemed to have impacted more sites than Penguin has, based on having watched reactions to all these updates. Not everyone will agree with me, of course. It’s also worth the regular reminder that for any site that “lost” in the rankings, someone gained. You rarely hear from those who gain.

Bottom line, Google seems pretty confident that the Penguin Update is indeed catching people who were spamming, as was intended.

Why Spam Still Gets Through

Certainly when I’ve looked into reports, I’ve often found spam at the core of why someone dropped. But if Penguin is working, why are some sites that are clearly spamming still getting through?

“No algorithm is perfect. While we’d like to achieve perfection, our litmus test is, ‘Do things get better than before?’,” Cutts said.

Cutts also explained that Penguin was designed to be quite precise, to act against pages when there was an extremely high-confidence of spam being involved. The downside is that some spam might get through, but the upside is that you have fewer false positives.

How Can You Recover?

One of the most difficult things with this update is telling people how to recover. Anyone hit by Penguin was deemed to be spamming Google.

In the past, if you spammed Google, you were told to file a reconsideration request. However, Google’s specifically said that reconsideration requests won’t help those hit by Penguin. They’ll recover naturally, Google says, if they clean the spam up.

However, one of the main reasons I’ve seen when looking at sites hit by Penguin seems to be bad linking practices. People have used sponsored WordPress themes, or poor quality reciprocal linking, have purchased links or participated in linking networks, such as those recently targeted by Google.

How do people pull themselves out of these link networks, if perhaps they don’t have control over those links now?

“It is possible to clean things up,” Cutts said.

“The bottom line is, try to resolve what you can,” Cutts said.

Waiting On Penguin To Update Again

If you do clean things up, how will you know? Ideally, you’ll see your traffic from Google recover, the next time Penguin is updated.

That leads to another important point. Penguin, like Panda, is a filter that gets refreshed from time-to-time. Penguin is not constantly running but rather is used to tag things as spam above-and-beyond Google’s regular spam filtering on a periodic basis.

Is Penguin a site-wide penalty like Panda or page-specific? Cutts wouldn’t say. But given that Panda has site-wide impacts, I think it’s a fair assumption that Penguin works the same.

What that means is that if some of your site is deemed Penguin-like, all of it may suffer. Again, recovery means cleaning up the spam. If you’ve cleaned and still don’t recover, ultimately, you might need to start all over with a fresh site, Cutts said.

New Concerns Over Negative SEO

Before Penguin, talk of “negative SEO” had been ramping up. Since then, it seems to have gotten worse in some places. I’ve seen post-after-post making it sound as if anyone is now in serious danger that some competitor can harm them.

At the core of these fears seems to be a perfect storm of assumptions. Google recently targeted some linking schemes. That caused some people to lose traffic. Google also sent out warnings about sites with “artificial” or “unnatural” links. That generated further concerns in some quarters. Then the Penguin Update hit, which caused more people to lose traffic as they were either hit for link spam or no longer benefited from link spam that was wiped out.

These things made it ripe for people to assume that pointing bad links at a site can hurt it. But as I wrote before, negative SEO concerns aren’t new. They’ve been around for years. Despite this, we’ve not seen it become a major concern.

Google has said it’s difficult for others to harm a site, and that’s indeed seemed to be the case. In particular, pointing bad links at a good site with many other good signals seems to be like trying to infect it with a disease that it has antibodies to. The good stuff outweighs the bad.

Cutts stressed again that negative SEO is rare and hard. “We have done a huge amount of work to try to make sure one person can’t hurt another person,” he said.

Cutts also stressed again what Google said before. Most of the those 700,000 messages to publishers that Google sent out earlier this year were not about bad link networks. Nor were they all suddenly done on the same day. Rather, many sites have had both manual and algorithmic penalties attached to them over time but which were never revealed. Google recently decided to open up about these.

After Negative SEO Campaign, A Link Warning

Of course, new messages do go out, which leads to the case of Dan Thies. His site was targeted by some trying to show that negative SEO works. He received an unnatural link warning after this happened. He also lost some rankings. Is this the proof that negative SEO really works?

Thies told me that his lost rankings were likely due to changes he made himself, when he removed a link across all pages on his site that led back to his home page. After restoring that, he told me, he regained his rankings.

His overall traffic, he said, never got worse. That tends to go against the concerns that negative SEO is a lurking threat, because if it had worked enough to tag his site as part of the Penguin Update, he should have seen a huge drop.

Still, what about link warning? Thies did believe that came because of the negative SEO attempt. That’s scary stuff. He also said he filed three reconsideration requests, which each time returned messages saying that there were no spam actions found. Was he hit with a warning but not one that was also associated with a penalty?

I asked Cutts about the case, but he declined to comment on Thies’s particular situation. He did say that typically a link warning is a precursor to a ranking drop. If the site fixes the problem and does a reconsideration request quickly enough, that might prevent a drop.

Solving The Concerns

I expect we’ll continue to see discussions of negative SEO, with a strong belief by some that it’s a major concern for anyone. I was involved in one discussion over at SEO Book about this that’s well worth a read.

When it’s cheaper to buy links than ever, it’s easy to see why there are concerns. Stories like what happened to Thies or this person, who got a warning after 24,000 links appeared pointing at his site in one day, are worrisome.

Then again, the person’s warning came after he apparently dropped in rankings because of Penguin. So did these negative SEO links actually cause the drop, or was it something else? As is common, it’s hard to tell, because the actual site isn’t provided.

To further confuse matters, some who lost traffic because of Penguin might not be victims of a penalty at all. Rather, Google may have stopped allowing some links to pass credit, if they were deemed to be part of some attempt to just manipulate rankings. If sites were heavily dependent on these artificial links, they’d see a drop just because the link credit was pulled, not because they were hit with a penalty.

I’ve seen a number of people now publicly wishing for a way to “disvow” links pointing at them. Google had no comment about adding such a feature at this time, when I asked about this. I certainly wouldn’t wait around for it now, if you know you were hit by Penguin. I’d do what you can to clean things up.

One good suggestion out of the SEO Book discussion was that Google not penalize sites for bad links pointing at them. Ignore the links, don’t let the links pass credit, but don’t penalize the site. That’s an excellent suggestion for defusing negative SEO concerns, I’d say.

I’d also stress again that from what I’ve seen, negative SEO isn’t really what most hit by Penguin should probably be concerned about. It seems far more likely they were hit by spam they were somehow actively involved in, rather than something a competitor did.

Recovering From Penguin

Our Google Penguin Update Recovery Tips & Advice post from two weeks ago gave some initial advice about dealing with Penguin, and that still holds up. In summary, if you know that you were hit by Penguin (because your traffic dropped on April 24):
  • Clean up on-page spam you know you’ve done
  • Clean up bad links you know you’re been involved with, as best you can
  • Wait for news of a future Penguin Update and see if you recover after it happens
  • If it doesn’t, try further cleaning or consider starting over with a fresh site
  • If you really believe you were a false positive, file a report as explained here
Just in, by the way, a list of WordPress plug-ins that apparently insert hidden links. If you use some of these, and they have inserted hidden links, that could have caused a penalty.

I’d also say again, take a hard look at your own site. When I’ve looked at sites, it’s painfully easy to find bad link networks they’ve been part of. That doesn’t mean that there’s not spam that’s getting past Penguin. But complaining about what wasn’t caught isn’t a solution to improving your own situation, if you were hit.
