How To Make Gold in Guild Wars 2 - Game Tips and Tricks

Making gold in Guild Wars 2 is easier than you may think and this article will teach you how to make plenty of it. With a few simple tips anyone can go from rags to riches without much difficulty. Remember that the in game economy is simple supply and demand just like an economy in real life. The Trading Post will provide you with a lot of market information you need to be a successful entrepreneur. It’s often said that another man’s trash is another man’s treasure and that still holds true in Guild Wars 2.

How to Make Gold

Start Gathering Early

First be sure to pick up Gathering Tools from a merchant at the start of the game. Merchants are identified on the map as the ones with coins over their head. Along with merchants, master craftsmen carry gathering tools and salvage kits. You only have enough gold for 2 gathering tools so I suggest the mining axe and wood chopper. Gather everything you can, as early as you can and make it a habit!

Sell (Almost) Everything at the Trading Post

Use the Trading Post! I can not stress this enough. Try not to just sell back to the merchant, you will profit much more from the Trading Post and also help the game economy. Also place orders frequently. Use basic economics to profit: buy low and sell high. Someone is always looking to dump some items that you can quickly turn in for a profit by managing the market price.

Be patient when using the Trading Post. It will take some time to research and get a good feel for what an item is really worth. Sometimes you may be better off using that item to craft something work even more coin.

Max Out Crafting
Crafting is good in that you gain XP and some crafted items sell very well. Just make sure you do some research at the Trading Post to see how much the mats you are gathering are selling for. Sometimes mats will be more than the items you create. But sometimes the items are more valuable. Items such as bags and upgrades you make as a jeweler will be in high demand thus very profitable. These are standard parts of any MMO so you could expect quick turnaround.

Crafting early on is going to be a big expense, so if you do not mind waiting I would suggest doing so. This will save you money right off the bat and just sell the mats on the Trading Post. You can buy your mats or farm them later on when you have already made some bank.

Farm and Sell Blood Vials
Farm Blood like a vampire that is bracing for the end of the world. Vials of Weak Blood are used to craft items in most disciplines. Armorsmith, Artificer, Huntsman, Leathworker, Tailor, and Weaponsmith all use them so you can see there will be a high demand item. Do not sell these back to the merchant but instead use the Trading Post. You can find these Vials drop from all levels from Beast type creatures, minotaur and snow trolls, in addition to Harpies, Bats, and some Spiders.
100% Map Completion

Map completion is a big part of Guild Wars 2 and if you focus on doing this you will level naturally. But not only are you gaining XP doing this, you will also receive nice coin, karma and gear for finishing your starting map.

Salvage Sigils

Salvaging Sigils (upgrade components for weapons) out of items can also prove to be profitable. Sometimes the Sigil is worth more than the item itself so use a Salvage Kit available from merchants. However, the Kits come at a price and are not always effective so make sure the risk is worth the reward beforehand. You can craft your own salvage kits to save money and bag space.

Sell your Dyes

Whether you are into how your armor looks or not other people in the game definitely are. And those people will be willing to pay a pretty penny to look good. If you come across a rare dye or make one on your own field some offers before using it on yourself. Some high end dyes will go for a couple of gold.

Trade and Sell Gems

Gems are going to be highly sought after in Guild Wars 2 since they will not be easily earned. Everything in the game can be earned just by playing but this item can be bought in the gem store. For that reason if you have a lot of money (in real life) you will be able to buy these gems and trade them for gold in game. If you play the market right you can make a lot of money buying and selling gems at the right time.

Outmanned Bonus

Outmanned is an effect that applies in World versus World to players whose team is outnumbered by those of enemy players. This will grant +20% Magic find, +33% Experience, +33% Karma. A boost to Magic find increases the player’s chance to receive rare loot from drops which will be great for when you are farming.

Karma for Cooking

Some of the cooking materials are only available from certain karma merchants. If you find one of those, you could spend some Karma and then flip them on the Trading Post. Since they require knowing where the merchant is, they should fetch a decent price due to low supply. Also Karma is pretty easy to gain so don’t be shy on using it.
Karma cooking items are now account bound.

Farm Dungeon Tokens

You can farm explorable dungeons and use the tokens to but runes and sigils. These are level 80 exotic items and some are highly sought after. Check the trading post for which ones are in high demand and you can turn those tokens into gold.

Pimp Your Computer, Nerd Style

Who says nerds can’t be cool? Get a laptop sticker, then a doctorate in
Relativity!
Laptop stickers announce ‘geekery’ and ‘nerdom’ to the world about as subtly as a fog
horn. They are the ultimate in customization – and with so many available, choosing one
that matches your personality isn’t really that hard. Any laptop that you own deserves one.
Proclaim to all who see it: ‘Here I am! Look at the geek, the geek who is me!’ Here are our
top 5:

Tux should be a firm favourite

Tux, the little Linux emblem – shouldn’t he really be on your laptop? If you’re not running
Linux, why aren’t you? Doesn’t every nerd have a wedge of their Hard Drive pie saved
for Open Source goodness? And while we’re talking about Tux, did you know there’s
an awesome Racer, featuring our eponymous hero tumbling down a snowy slope,
desperately snatching at passing fish? I kid you not. Google it!

Impress friends and family with your impeccable knowledge of evolution

This joke’s been around for a while, but if you want to represent your fine geeky
awesomeness as the pinnacle of billions of years of selective evolution, this really is the
most effective way. We think perhaps the desktop monitor on this sticker should at least
be upgraded and replaced with a laptop….or how some peripherals, perhaps Arduino 3D
printer!

One for the networking niche

This should make beautiful sense to the networking nerds among us – unless you have
a Netgear router! Sentimentally accurate and the embodiment of geek humour – why not
wear your heart on your laptop with this tasteful decal.

Reassuring.

Aficionados of Douglas Adams’ seminal work of literature, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the
Galaxy, will attain unreasonable levels of calm and tranquility by staring at these friendly,
bold words. Put them on your laptop and not only will you look like you’re carrying the
Guide itself, you might find a moment of solace in following the advice mid-hackathon.

Recruit gullible non-nerds with your lies

They say ‘Science is more of an art than a...,’ well, actually, no. I’ve never heard anyone
say that. If they did, though, they might have a point – this stunning sticker not only
displays 7 top activities you can engage in, as a fully-fledged mad scientist, it also does it
in glorious quad-colour. Why not inspire the guy sitting opposite you in the cafe to reach
for something bigger than his history degree? Or, at very least, you could use it as a
helpful bucket list from which to tick off life’s little achievements.

Apple in talks with Samsung to buy $7.8 billion worth of components

It's not clear if it's related to that mysterious $3.9 billion "strategic investment" or not, but it looks like Apple could be about to throw some serious cash in Samsung's direction. According to a report published in the Korea Economic Daily, Apple is expected to purchase some $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung this year, including displays, applications processors, and NAND flash chips -- all intended for use in iPhones and iPads. As the paper notes, Apple would become Samsung's single biggest customer if the deal goes through, although the two obviously aren't strangers to massive deals -- Apple has already famously run Samsung's flash memory supplies dry a few times.

Samsung's new 10nm flash memory chips much smaller, faster, better

Samsung's new 64GB mobile flash memory chips are smaller and faster, will establish a new standard

Even though Samsung only announced volume production of ultra-fast eMMC memory chips back in August, it's already upgrading to a newer generation of hardware. Moving from the previous 20nm process to 10nm, the new 64GB eMMC Pro Class 2000 has a 20 percent smaller physical footprint, and claims 30 percent advantages in both performance and manufacturing productivity. While its previous chips only starting taking advantage of JEDEC's eMMC 4.5 interface standard a few months ago, Samsung plans to approach the group next year to create a new standard that can handle this design. It has a write speed of 2,000 IOPS (input/output per second) and a read speed of 5,000 IOPS, besting the 1,500/3,500 numbers reported on the older hardware, and kicks up the bandwidth to 260 MB/s read and 50MB/s write. These chips went into production late last month and are destined for slim phones and tablets near you, even if they don't say Samsung on the outside.

Bacteria to replace the modern hard drive

Guest Post By:

She aspires to be an intrepid tech and gaming enthusiast with the exploratory spirit and witty prose of her favorite author of Robert Louis Stevenson. Treasure Island for the tech world."

It is broadly believed that we are nearing the boundaries of modern hard drive capability.Hard-drive based electronic equipment has been steadily reducing in size. This has been made possible by the miniaturisation of their components. However because of limitations in current manufacturing technology, we are fast approaching the confines of this method. Coupled with increasingly demanding software and applications, hard drive manufacturers are eagerly seeking an alternative to the traditional model.

Surprisingly, bacteria are being looked at as a viable option to replace the micro-electronics of the current hard-drive. The base of the research into this idea is that bacteria can accommodate a far smaller area, whilst performing the same function as current micro-electronics. This will enable laptops, notebooks and other hard- drive based electronics to become even smaller and lighter and ultimately remain competitive in the computing market.

Biocomputing has shown promise following research by a number of teams globally, most notably from the University of Leeds and the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.

These new developments are based on the bacterian Magnetos pirillum magneticum. This bacterium has the strange characteristic of “eating” iron. The consumption of this iron is processed by internal proteins, which produce theby-product magnetite. Magnetite is absorbed by the bacteria and is stored inside. Magnetite, as the name might suggest, is magnetic, and is therefore influenced by a magnetic field. A swathe of these bacteria under a certain magnetic field leads to a precisely aligned formation of magnetite, which is critical in hard drive function.

As the size of the bacteriais just 25 nanometres, there is the potential forsignificantly smaller components for future hard drives. It is hoped that each bacteria will hold one bit of information opening up the possibility of 8 terabits per square inch. This research, along with other Biological Nano scale developments are paving the way for advances in biochemical, biomechanical and bio-electronic computers. As promising as this technology sounds, it is still in its infancy and poses some considerable challenges ahead. The manufacturing process of hard drives will need to completely change in order to accommodate a biological organism. And then there are the costs. Due to the early stages of the technology, its manufacturing process is still very expensive. This will limit a commercial release of the technology until cheaper methods are developed. A further concern involves quality control, particularly because of the small scale of the technology.

But these concerns are not stopping researchers in their quest to develop and propagate Biocomputing, as they see the advantages of the technology far outweighing the challenges ahead of it. Since the human brain is the most powerful and complex machine known to man, and is purely biological, they have every right to believe so.

With technology advancing at an exponential rate, it is very likely that we will see a viable form of this technology on the market in the not too distant future.

Portable mCAMLITE - Turn your iPhone Into a Video Camera

The mCAMLITE turns your iPhone into a top-level video camera (Images: Action Life Media)
Yes, you can use your iPhone as a more than decent video camera, but if you want to get better, more professional results, wrap it in an mCAMLITE.

Made from aircraft-grade billet aluminum, the mCAMLITE not only protects your iPhone when climbing on rocks to get the perfect angle, but it gives it the weight and heft you need to stabilize your hands while shooting.

And because the pros don’t just use one standard lens when pushing for the perfect shot, the kit comes with two 37mm interchangeable lenses: a wide angle for capturing everything you want in the scene, and a macro when you want to get up close and personal. Together, they give you the chance to get shots that are downright impossible with the iPhone’s lens.

Since the best videos have sound, the mCAMLITE comes with a 180-degree external microphone, allowing you to capture directional sound and reduce ambient noise, so your YouTube fans can hear every note of your keyboard-playing cat…

The mCAMLITE’s housing is designed with consideration of your growth as an auteur. It has mounts on top and bottom for accessories and tripods, and has a cold shoe on top for pro quality mics and lights. They even offer a pair of action carts so you can slide your cam along to get smooth action shots. So as you get better and demand more from your cam, the mCAMLITE can oblige.

At only $159.95 it’s the perfect starter kit for any visionary filmmaker (or photographer), to add to their portfolio without spending a fortune. Don’t quote me on this, but I think this is how Scorsese got started…

BoostTurbine Powers Your Gadget when there is No Power

Hand cranking gives you the power to power your phone when there is no outlet in sight (Photos: Eton Corp)

Bringing a portable charger along on a camping trip or hike is always a good idea, but if the trip keeps you away from civilization for longer than your porto-batt can survive, you could be outta luck when it comes time to send that emergency call or text. Or you could pack a BoostTurbine charger.

That’s because the durable BoostTurbine Series portable chargers can provide your devices with power even when there is no power source. Because you are the power source.
Both the the BoostTurbine2000 and BoostTurbine1000 come equipped with a hand-turbine power generator to serve as a “back up for your back up solution.” Literally providing you with never-ending power, both feature a rechargeable lithium battery that, when there’s no outlet in sight, can get juice just from cranking.

With only one minute of cranking, the hand turbine power generator can produce enough power for a quick call or a few texts. Enough to get you out of trouble. When fully charged, the $59 BoostTurbine2000 can provide a full charge to most smartphones, and the $49 BoostTurbine1000 will give you a 50 percent charge. (Personally, I’d spend the extra $10 bucks for the full charge ability. Less cranking, more relaxing.)
The 1000 comes in Black, the 2000 comes in Black, White, Silver and Red

Both models are made of lightweight aluminum to put up with some punishment, and are compact enough to carry in your pocket. And both feature a Micro-USB DC input (cable included), a standard USB port, and an LED charge indicator to let you know the battery charge level. (So you know when to stop cranking.) Go ahead, venture deeper… you know you’ll have power when you need it. (A cell signal? That we can’t promise.)

Facebook couples pages give a virtual tour of your love life

Continuing with its tradition of getting wrangled into privacy issues with new features, Facebook has launched pages for couples. Much like the recently revamped friendship pages, the Facebook couples pages are joint digital profiles for couples that tracks all Facebook content connecting the two users in a relationship.

The couples pages not only combine photos and posts in which a user and his/her partner are tagged but also pull in other content such as comments shared between the two on Facebook. It in a way gives a virtual tour of a couple's love life.

If you have mentioned that you are in a relationship on your Facebook profile, you can get the consolidated view of your and your partner's togetherness on Facebook at www.facebook.com/us. Many users are complaining that the new feature is "creepy". Michael MacDonald at canada.com calls it a "bad rom-com" while Jennifer Wright at TheGloss.com wants to "vomit".

Facebook couples pages give a virtual tour of your love life
Facebook couples pages creates joint digital profiles for couples who have added their relationship on Facebook.
That Facebook hasn't informed its users about the new feature and that there doesn't seem to be any simple way of opting out of the new couples pages have irked many.

It is interesting to note that while Mark Zuckerberg's wife Priscilla Chan has her relationship status public on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg's profile does not list any relationship info.

If you also want to know what other couples look like together on Facebook, try this http://www.facebook.com/INSERT-FACEBOOK-USERNAME-OF-FIRST-PARTNER?and=INSERT-FACEBOOK-USERNAME-OF-OTHER-PARTNER . Replace the "INSERT-FACEBOOK-USERNAME-OF-FIRST-PARTNER" and "INSERT-FACEBOOK-USERNAME-OF-OTHER-PARTNER" with the respective usernames and copy and paste it into the browser address bar. Press enter. For example Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook username is "zuck" and Priscilla Chan's "priscilla".

MV Agusta Rivale 800 Unveiled - Best Stylish Looks & Performance

Here is the new MV Agusta Rivale 800 in the flesh.  Whether you like the styling or not, it is certainly striking and further evidence that MV follows its own direction.

This is a very serious performance motorcycle, just like all of the other MVs.  125 hp in a 374 pound package (claimed dry weight).

The 800cc triple is a stroked version of the 675 found in the F3, which is also now found in the Brutale 800.  Ride-by-wire throttle and three engine maps are the control interface between rider and the engine, which has an MV signature counter-rotating crankshaft.

The frame is a combination of steel trellis and aluminum, with the fully-adjustable suspension provided by Marzocchi in front and Sachs in back. Front braking is via four-piston Brembo radial calipers.  The European price is the equivalent of slightly under $14,000.00, although we don’t know the actual price and availability date here in the U.S.  The following is the full press release from MV Agusta:

MV Agusta Rivale 800. Unique both in design, performance, and absolute riding satisfaction.
Unquestionably MV Agusta, Rivale 800 enters a new market segment to go where only emotions dominate. This extraordinary motorcycle boasts performance figures that leave little to the imagination: 170 kg, 125 hp.

The unrivalled visual identity has been extended to every component and every surface of this machine. The MV Agusta Rivale 800 is a result of passion, experience, and inspiration to capture the essence of what is truly representative of our historic brand. It further expands upon our range with a new, eclectic interpretation of our modern three-cylinder engine that debuted on the F3 675 and also equips the Brutale 675 and 800 alongside the renewed four-cylinder family F4 and Brutale.

The Rivale 800 exudes an emotive design from every angle. Dominating the road with its mix of harmonious and “discordant” lines, tense yet voluptuous, bordering on futuristic whilst retaining synergy with our past. Volumes are perfectly balanced, containing areas that draw your eye to an incredible level of attention to detail. A sculptural composition where the engine and the chassis are always at the focal point. The front-fairing is compact and discreet yet able to characterise the front ends exuberant personality. Three elements, the mudguard, the side panels and the fuel tank are individually united to form a strong visual shield graphic that makes this machine instantly recognisable. Singularly MV Agusta. The middle section is reduced to the physical limits and designed to promote an unhindered riding style allowing the rider maximum freedom of movement on a sufficiently large and ergonomically considered saddle. The rear is elegant, sinuous, yet incisive and characterised by twin trailing-edge floating blade lighting incorporating light guides to accentuate the rear profile. At the front LED/light guide technology is  used in a similar fashion to highlight the profile of the vehicle while reducing visual width. This solution offers an absolutely distinctive identity while increasing the visibility and consequently passive safety. The three-dimensional amber turn signals are perfectly integrated into the beautifully designed hand guards.

The rear side lights and brake lights are housed in two separate elements, while the direction indicators have been placed on small “dynamic” wings, which relate to the various number plate dimensions. The rear view mirrors are designed to be effective and integrate seamlessly into the design of the bike. They are retractable, for sporty driving on closed roads or on the track, and when open are also telescopic to  improve and increment rear visibility.

The dashboard has been designed specifically for Rivale 800 featuring a modern “monochrome” fully digital, multi-function display. It is compact to optimise the front fairing proportions yet remains perfectly legible while offering maximum availability of information and parameters.

Chassis and engine are once again protagonists. A perfect combination of fine engineering excellence portrayed in a mix of sculptural beauty, mechanical purity, functionality, and total performance. Three cylinders, define the agile, swift, dynamic soul of the new Rivale 800; Beyond imagination. Compactness is an obligatory, aside from technological excellence. Our goals have been achieved and far exceeded. The three-cylinder in-line Rivale 800 boasts a counter-rotating crankshaft that debuted on our Supersports F3 675: a unique solution for a road based machine that epitomises MV Agusta’s racing spirit. Technology MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System) allows for performance, smoothness of power delivery, ease of riding and extreme personalization, with three engine maps and a custom default. The Custom setting permits complete freedom to suit the personal requirements and preferences of the rider. The throttle control is Full Ride-By-Wire.

The frame is our signature MV Agusta philosophy. The front section is comprised of a steel trellis combined with a rear of two aluminium alloy plates, that act as a fulcrum for the sculpted single sided rear swingarm and suspension. The dimensions of the chassis have been redefined to ensure incredible handling: the angle of the steering head is half of a degree more open than the Brutale 800. The excursion of the fork and shock have also been increased to provide more comfort and conformity to the road surface. The suspension units are respectively by Marzocchi and Sachs. They are adjustable in spring preload as well as hydraulic compression and rebound damping.

As on every MV Agusta, the braking system uses the best products to achieve outstanding performance. The pair of front 320 mm diameter discs are gripped by twin four-piston Brembo radial callipers. The rear is comprised of a 220 mm diameter disc mated to a two-piston calliper.

This outstanding MV Agusta Rivale 800 thoroughbred will be available in the second half of 2013 from 10,990 €.

Honda CBR500R 2013 Breaks Cover In US

Very recently, there were some spy pictures floating on the internet of the Honda CB500, the CBR500 and the CB500X in action on some Italian commercial. Now, Honda Motorcycles has set its first targets on the US market with the CBR500R and the motorcycle looks great. Honda has also turned to make its products more value-for-money like its Japanese rival, Kawasaki did some time ago with the launch of the Ninja 300R and ninja 400R with the price range being very modest. The Honda CBR500R that goes on sale will only cost about $1,800 more than its smaller sibling, the CBR250R. So, what this means that for an additional 1 lakh rupees, the US customers will be able to get double the displacement and so double power and torque compared to the CBR250R.

The Honda CBR500R closely resembles the racing lines of the CBR600RR and CBR1000RR motorcycles. Overall, it looks very sporty and aggressive. It is powered by an all-new liquid-cooled parallel-twin DOHC engine. It also gets Honda’s famed Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) that ensures proper fuel mixture delivery through continuous monitoring several parameters and thus ultimately giving you crisp throttle response. The engine churns out close to 54 bhp of power. The engine is of square design with bore X stroke 67.0mmX66.0mm. This makes it more relaxed on the rev range that the CBR250R which sports a short stroke design.

The engine is mated to a 6 speed gearbox. Underneath, you get a diamond-shaped steel tube frame. The chassis is lightweight, yet claimed to be responsive. At the front the bike gets telescopic forks while the rear gets the Pro-link single-shock rear suspension with pre-load adjustable with 4.7 inches of travel. Braking is provided by twin-piston caliper, 320mm disc brake at the front and single caliper, 240mm disc at the rear. It also comes in an ABS version.  I sincerely hope Honda brings this bike to the Indian market.

All Done! Cheers!

If Your PC is Infected with Malware or Virus use Free Scan Tools

Windows users need to have a decent antivirus program running on their PC for security problems. Microsoft is trying hard to solve this problem since early days by providing extra software for security scan. Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender are few of them released by the company for its own operating system. And with Windows 8, they are providing a better Windows Defender (in-build antivirus program with better protection and security) to get rid of the expensive third-party antivirus or anti-malware programs.

Even after installing a security programs like the one mentioned above, you may see some suspicious behavior on your PC, in case the antivirus definition is not up to date or some recent virus or malware programs hit your system. If you think or doubt that some malicious software is slowing your system performance or causing blue screen of death, it is essential to scan the system completely and find if it has been hit or infected by some malware.

Third-party antivirus programs are not that expensive (at least for their purpose and peace of mind you get after installing and keep running them) but still you need to pay for that (except from some free antivirus software like AVG). If you don’t want to keep running an antivirus or anti-malware programs always on your computer because you think it may slow down your system or is expensive, you can try free scanners every time to just find out if your system is safe enough.

Kaspersky, a leading antivirus/anti-malware software maker, has released a free scanning tool named “Kaspersky Security Scan 2.0” which can scan your Windows PC for such infection. You can download the installation file from this page and install that on your system. The EXE file is of ~44 MB and will take few minutes for complete system scan (depending on your hard disk and data size). You can also schedule the software to scan your system on weekly or daily basis.

Note – It only scan the system and notify about the infection. It doesn’t remove the viruses (if found) or disinfect the system. To do that, you will have to purchase or renew a decent third-party software or Microsoft’s security products to scan and disinfect the system.

Apart from the Security Scan tool by Kaspersky, there are many free online scanning tools also available. But I would recommend you to have a native software (like Kaspersky Scan Tool) as it will take less time to scan the complete system without providing any authority to those online scanners.

Norton is also having a free scan tool named “Norton Security Scan and Security Check”. You can either download the tool which will automatically scan your system for security concerns every week OR you can use their online scanning tools as well.

Get Old Style Start Menu in Windows 8

Windows 8 is targeted to become as the single operating system for multiple Eco-systems, and to do that the OS design team has made some significant changes in this new version of Windows.

The very first visible change is the new Start Menu page. In Windows 8, if you hit the Windows Key on your keyboard, you will be taken to the scroll-able page having thumbs (showing respective information) of apps installed on your system. This new start screen looks really good and I think it is the perfect screen for touch devices. But you may find it a bit troublesome on normal desktop screens.

If you miss the old Windows 7, Vista or XP like Start Menu in Windows 8, you can get that by either of the 4 ways explained below.

You can either use third-party software to do that OR use some tricks to get similar features (like Start Menu with keyboard shortcut or Mouse Movement). Find these techniques listed below.

Third-party Software to get Start Menu in Windows 8

1. Start8

Stardock release an application to get the new, stylish start menu. You need to install the Start8 application to get that kind of Start Menu after hitting the Win Key . It brings the similar menu as we get after clicking the Search button on right navigation of Windows 8. Once you get this menu, you can type the name of application you want to open and run.

2. ViStart

Another third-party software to get traditional Start Menu. Once you install ViStart, you get the traditional Start Menu (just like Windows 7 or Vista). Here you get Control Panel, Recent Applications etc. as normal Start Menu.

Warning – When you install the ViStart application, don’t forget to uncheck the “Babylon Search and Toolbar” installation otherwise it will install this add-on of Internet Explorer as well which is not required.

Simple Tricks to get Start Menu without Software Installation

3. Right Click on Start Page

If you don’t want to install any third-party software to get the Start Menu, you can still get that by simple trick. Go to the normal start page and right-click on the left-bottom corner of the page. There you get right-click menu as,
  • Run
  • System
  • Device Manager
  • Control Panel
  • Task Manager
  • Search
  • Program and Features

Start Menu like options in Windows 8

I think they are sufficient as you can easily type the application name inside the run box OR directly open the listed applications like Control Panel.

4. Add Search and Run Prompt on Toolbar

If you use the Start Menu to open applications installed on your computer, you can easily do that by having “Address bar” on your Windows Toolbar. Right click on the Desktop or Explorer toolbar and select Toolbars ==> Address.

This will add the address bar on the toolbar and you can search and run applications from there only. You can also add Desktop, Computer Drive etc. on Address bar for quick access.

Type and Run Applications in Windows 8 from Address bar

Bonus – You can also get the run prompt by hitting  + R keys on your keyboard, and then type the application name to run that.

Run Chrome OS on Any Windows PC using 4GB USB Stick

Google Chrome OS comes bundled with Chromebooks and Chromebox. Either you will have to purchase these devices from nearest retailers or you may run Linux Distributions of the Chrome OS on any other device including your existing Windows PC or Mac. Linux Distributions of Chrome OS are based on the original Google Chrome OS with limited compatibility. There is an open source installation available on Chromium project site (Google Chrome OS is a modified version of Chromium OS) to install Google Chrome OS on non-chromebook devices but it involves few tech savvy steps. Don’t worry, if you want to try the Chrome OS ( Always a new computer ) without much effort, checkout a simple way to run Chrome OS on non-chromebook devices (like Windows notebooks, netbooks, laptop, desktop etc.) by just booting the device using 4GB+ USB pen drive.

Follow the steps below to get Chrome OS running in less than 5 minutes.
  • Download either of these two Linux Distribution of Chrome OS – Vanilla Or Lime (size of any of these files ~250MB)
    • Vanilla is the basic version of linux distribution whereas Lime is having better support for different hardware devices like Ethernet and sound drivers
  • Unzip the downloaded file, you can see a IMG file of size ~1.91GB in the unzipped folder
  • Download the binary copy of Windows Image Writer and Double-Click on the EXE file from the downloaded folder
  • Locate the IMG file in this application and also select the USB drive where you want to write this IMG file. Don’t forget to format the USB stick before writing the image file. The minimum recommended size for USB drive is 4GB.
  • Click on ‘Write’ button to start writing the image file to the USB drive or stick
  • Boot your netbook, laptop or desktop using that USB drive. You will see Chromium OS booting and asking for the details like Keyboard, Language and Available Network. Provide these details. You will be ready to enter Google credentials and login to the Chrome OS.
Chrome OS will welcome you with Google Chrome help document. You can navigate to the different options like settings, web store etc.

The desktop of Chrome OS is having only one option i.e. ‘Change the Wallpaper’. Here is how the desktop of Chrome OS looks with a pre-installed wallpaper.

Cloud Print
Chrome OS is all about cloud computing as you store most of your data on cloud and access that from there only. If you want to print a document, you can use Google Cloud Print application which is available on Chrome browser settings panel. You just need to locate the printing devices (Cloud Print ready Printers or normal old printers).

Always a New Computer
Google and Samsung promote the Chromebook or Chromebox as “Always a new computer” because everything is on cloud and the OS, browser etc. gets auto-update without any charges. You are not storing anything on local device and whenever you change your Chromebook or login to your friend’s Chromebook with your Google Credentials, you will see all your apps and bookmarks there as well (just like your own Chromebook).

This is true with this Linux distribution as well. As you are using Google Credentials in this Chrome OS to login, your data will be synchronized with your Google Account. Whenever you login to a Chrombook or Chrome OS Linux Distribution, you will be able to see all your apps and bookmarks everywhere.

Sync all your data like bookmarks, settings, apps, extensions, passwords, autofill, themes etc. in Chrome OS

How much do you save by NOT purchasing a Chrombook or Chrombox?

I am not saying that with this Linux distribution you are having the same device and OS as Chromebook but it is really really close. Google Chrome OS is also based on Ubuntu and Chromium OS which are open source but Google is shipping Chrome OS with Chromebooks only. This Linux distribution is having all the capabilities of Chrome OS (with some bugs and fixes) and it runs as smooth as any other operating system.

Microsoft Office 2013 Best Upgrade option

Microsoft unveiled Office 2013 consumer preview and according to the CEO of the company, this is the most ambitious release of Microsoft Office that ever done. Office 2013 is having lot many new features including inbuilt PDF reader and editor i.e. now MS Word can open and edit PDF documents. Apart from that, Skype integration is also a cool feature which allows users to collaborate with other users or teammates using this VOIP service. Microsoft also incorporated Cloud features like SkyDrive integration and Office 365 integration with this version. But if your computer is running older version of Windows like XP or Vista, you will not be able to run Office 2013. It is made for Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Microsoft Office 2013
According to the system requirement section released by Microsoft for Office 2013, you need Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2012 to install and run the Office applications. Microsoft has already said that they will discontinue the support for Windows XP from April 2014. Company will continue support for Vista till 2017 but they are fully aware that wither most of the Vista users upgraded to Windows 7 or shifted to Mac. Yeah, we all know the reason behind.
Windows XP and Vista are not there in System Requirements for Office 2013 Preview

Is it worth to upgrade the system for Office 2013?

Lot many companies are still using Windows XP as they don’t see any loss in keeping it as it is. Individuals who are running Windows XP are either having old configuration computer or they don’t want to invest in Windows 7 upgrade. Office 2013 is a cool upgrade with new features and touch friendly layout but still Office 2007 and 2010 are sufficient for daily documentation and even for complex tasks and presentation. I always recommend to try new features and application but it depends whether you want to invest in that or not. If you are fine with Office 2007, there is not any critical need to upgrade to 2013. BUT I would definitely suggest you to upgrade from XP or Vista to Windows 7 not just because of Office 2013 compatibility but for overall performance improvement. Windows 7 is no doubt the best upgrade released by Microsoft after XP.

Blog or Website

Blogs are indeed websites, but there are distinct and relevant differences and advantages to both.

Most people think of a website as a digital storefront – a place for offering products and services, activities that you can also accomplish with a blog.

Then what exactly is the difference between a blog and a website?

A Blog is a Digital Magazine

Blogs are websites that are designed to engage an audience with fresh content – just like a magazine.

If you are a blogger you are a publisher – no different than a print publisher. The cover of your magazine is the home page – your most recent content.

Google loves blogs because the content they publish is fresh.  Fresh content is relevant.  It’s current.  If it also happens to be high quality, it quickly rises to the top of Google search.

Are you a sports fanatic?  If so, then you regularly check the updates at ESPN.com.  If business is one of your primary interests, you do the same with The Wall Street Journal at WSJ.com.

We all have interests, and the nature of digital publishing drives us to blogs where we can get the most up-to-date news and commentary that challenges or affirms our perspectives.

As a business owner, you have to determine whether being a news source or a storefront is right for you. Which will earn you more business – commentary with personality or detailed product and service offerings?

If fresh and original content is most likely to attract, engage, and convert prospects into buyers, then a blog or digital magazine as your home page is the right online strategy for you.

A Website is a Digital Storefront

Some consumers are on a short timetable and are more concerned about product and service details. In other words, they are ready to buy.

If your products and services are well-known or in high demand, then a website with a home page that is focused on commerce is clearly the best approach for your business.

If like many of us you still need to work at attracting new prospects to your website, then a blog should be integral to your online marketing strategy – and most likely your home page.

Remember the purpose of the web is search, and Google loves blogs because they serve up fresh content that is in demand.

The most promising option these days may be a hybrid site that combines the best of a blog and traditional website.

You can build a site to highlight your primary products and services front and center (above the fold)  on the home page of your site – with the most recent blog posts below the fold.

This effectively monetizes your site by keeping your commerce primary, while also taking advantage of the SEO benefits of combining fresh blog content on that same page. My favorite example of this is Copyblogger.com.  An example of a larger organization is Edelmandigital.com.

This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds.
However, there is a catch.  Yep, you have to do the work of actively creating fresh content.

Sometimes even that is not enough.  However, it is still the surest ways for staying in the good graces of Google.

What’s your view on this?  Do you plan to make any changes to your site?

Leave a comment below or share this with your community with any of the share buttons below – or with those on the little red bar at the bottom of this page.

Blogger vs WordPress

With all the noise about social networking sites in the last several years, it's easy to forget that if you've got more to say than what can be expressed in 140 characters, or want to do more than post brief updates, your best bet is a blog.

There are a wealth of blogging services and software out there -- so which should you use? If you're a business or other professional organization, you probably want to use full-bore website building software that includes a blogging component. However, that type of software requires experience with server setups, HTML code and site management.

If you don't have that expertise, or want to spend your valuable time on creating content rather than wrangling with technical issues, you can opt for a service that hosts your blog for you -- for free. These hosted blogging services take care of all the nitty-gritty backend work, and allow you to focus on what's most important to you: The content of your blog.

They offer pre-built content management systems that make it easy to write, edit and manage blog posts, letting you decide whether to write using WYSIWIG editors or instead insert the code yourself. They also let you switch back and forth between the two when you want.

That's just the basics, though. Using a hosted service doesn't mean giving up power and features. They let you easily create polls and customized forms and integrate with social networking sites, and they offer considerable site management features, including tools for handling comments and automatically killing blog spam. They use sophisticated tools for tracking traffic, and let you dig deeply to find underlying patterns that may help you draw more visitors. And they have plenty of online help and community-based support when you run into problems, or need advice from others who have had the same issues that you have.

(For a review of microblogging sites that offer quick-and-dirty blogging tools with a strong social networking component, see our microblogger shootout.)

In this article, I examine two of the best-known hosted blogging services: Blogger and WordPress.
Blogger was one of the first blogging tools available. Launched back in 1999 by Pyra Labs, it was bought by Google in 2003 and has been considerably redesigned since.

WordPress is based on the popular WordPress open source server-based blogging software first released in 2003 that underlies many sites on the Web -- Wordpress.org claimed in August of 2011 that its server software powered nearly 15% of the top million web sites in the world

(Note: Confusingly, both the hosting service and the blogging software are called WordPress; the former, which is being reviewed here, is found at WordPress.com while the latter can be downloaded at WordPress.org and was reviewed as part of our site builder shootout.)

You won't go wrong choosing either. But as you'll see, they're very different services, aimed at different users. Check out our head-to-head review to see which is right for you.
